What is Kabaddi?

Kabaddi is a contact team sport that originated in India and is now played worldwide. The game is played in a large square arena in 20 minutes halves, for a combined playing time of 40 minutes. In Kabaddi, two teams compete against each other, and the objective is for a player, known as the “raider,” to enter the opponent’s half, tag as many defenders as possible, and return to their half without being tackled. The defenders, on the other hand, aim to stop the raider and prevent them from returning. Kabaddi involves elements of strength, agility, and strategy.

Lobby: The lobby serves as an expanded playing area and comes into play when a defender has been touched. It provides both raiders and defenders with more space to attempt scoring or getting the raider out.

Bonus Line: The bonus line becomes active when there are 6 or 7 defenders on the court. If a raider places one foot in the bonus line and has the other foot in the air, successfully returning to the midline scores one point.

Super Tackle: When the defending team has 3 or fewer players on the court and still manages to tackle a raider, it’s termed a super tackle, earning two points. One point for eliminating the raider and a bonus point for achieving this with 3 or fewer defenders.

Do or Die Raid: After two unsuccessful raids (scoring zero both times), the third raid becomes a ‘do or die raid.’ Failing to score on the third raid results in the raider being declared out.

All Out: In a rare instance where a raider successfully gets all the defenders out in a single raid, it is called an ‘all out.’ The raiding team earns one point per eliminated player and an additional two points.
