Terminology in cockfighting
For the purpose of understanding cockfighting, players and fans need to share a common understanding of cockfighting. Terminological terms used in the sport of cockfighting (Sabong).
League; NFGB: national federation of game poultry breeders (shortly Federation);
Guild – is a member of the Federation. If there are no conditions to establish an association, federations will include all members under their umbrella.
Organizer – is the person who organizes a derby match (a match between two teams in the same territory).
Derby Board (national) a media advertising agency or three-member Committee appointed by the Federation (consisting of at least 2 Association Presidents and 1 senior derby supervisor for the national derby), to supervise proceedings and is empowered to resolve related disputes.
Derby Committee (local) For local derby, derby committees will be established by the president of the local association, of the board of directors and a representative of the Federation.

Cock (Rooster) – an adult rooster, bred and trained to upgrade its fighting ability.
Stag – a rooster about twelve (12) months old or less.
BULLSTAG (Middle-aged chicken) – a chicken more than twelve (12) months old. (mid stage of stag and cock).
Cockfighting / SULTADA – a fight between two (2) roosters armed with knives (Tari), after a bet is placed.
Cockfighting / SABONG – a sport that uses chickens to play cockfights.
DERBY a cockfighting event by the Federation or an organizer for the participants, handled and paid by the Federation/organizer for the winners.
PIT / SABUNGAN / GALLERA – cockfighting venues.
PIT / Rueda – arena where the roosters fight.
KNIFE / Tari – a steel weapon with a distinct curved shape and a single cutting edge that tapers to a piercing point used in a cockfight, molded in traditional art by Filipino artisans .
PIT MANAGER – a manager who, before the start of a sultada, controls and directs proceedings according to the rules, and enforces discipline and order therein.
Referee / SENTECIADOR – the person who officiates in a cockfight with full control from the start of a fight until the last minute to decide win-lose.
HANDLER / SOLTADOR – the person who releases the cocks during the fight.
HEELER / MANANARI – person who ties tari knives to chickens.
ENTRY – the name represented by those participating in a derby for the purpose of having their cocks participate in the fight.
ENTRY FEE – a certain amount of money due to all participants (entries) in a derby, to be able to participate in said competition.
POT / POT MONEY – total amount of entry fee.
BET CENTER / Parada – bet through the manager.
LLAMADO the chicken is bet higher than its opponent.
DEJADO – the cock is bet lower than its opponent.
MERON – the chicken area with higher bets is indicated.
WALA – the chicken area with the lower bet number indicated.
PAGO – solicited bets to increase the dejado cock, to balance the bets on the llamado cock.
Recorded weight – the weight of a cock sent for competition.
Actual weight – the actual weight of a chicken after being checked by the organizers.
Leg band – a ribbon worn on the chicken’s leg for identification.
MATCHING – choose chickens with similar stats to fight.
Duel – a combined fight between 2 cocks in a derby day.
CARREO / CONFRONTATION – The process of bringing the cocks face to face to decide whether to continue or stop fighting.
BREAK – interruption of carreo caused by chickens pecking each other during confrontation.
Non-standard weight – Weight much lower than the standard weight.
Bad body shape – Deformities can affect other chickens or themselves.
DEFAULT – Failure to present a cock for competition.
REPLACEMENT – the replacement of another chicken suitable for certain conditions.
CHICKEN REPLACEMENT – the chicken is replaced.
POINT – the number of points the chicken achieves in a match.
NO-BEARING FIGHT – a fight that is regulated so that the outcome has no bearing on the derby, including the special prize.
42 HOURS / 16 battles – specified time and number of battles.
JOKER – a chicken provided by the manager when no suitable bird can be found to compete.
Countdown – countdown until match time, guaranteed to be limited to only 10 minutes.
Wing band: Identification tag attached to the wing of a chicken.
